Longevity Through Relationship

Being in meaningful relation with others is a fundamental part of longevity.

Loneliness kills.

In contrast to this silent epidemic, many people believe that “dogs keep us young at heart.”

But beyond companionship, the human canine bond is emerging as one of the most profound models for understanding how emotional connection shapes biology and influences lifespan.

Loneliness is recognized as a major health risk and a significant predictor of mortality. According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report, loneliness contributes to over 871,000 deaths annually worldwide, a figure that rivals death tolls from major diseases like heart conditions and diabetes.

A landmark Swedish study involving 3.4 million people found that dog owners had significantly lower mortality rates especially those living alone. Researchers linked this to increased physical activity, emotional stability, and the social support that dogs lovingly provide.

Another review published in Circulation confirmed this pattern across multiple studies, showing that dog owners consistently had reduced risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death.

Beyond lifestyle factors, when a human and their dog gaze into each other’s eyes, both experience a surge of oxytocin the “bonding” hormone that lowers stress, supports heart health, and strengthens emotional attachment (the same bond that occurs between mothers and infants).

Dogs also mirror our environments and age-related diseases, making them key translational models in aging research. They live alongside us, share our exposures, and reflect many of the same biological processes that influence health and lifespan.

At Dog Years DAO, we’re building a decentralized research collective exploring longevity through relationships.

Our goals are simple yet revolutionary:

🔹 Support open, ethical canine–human longevity research.

🔹 Incentivize citizen scientists and veterinarians to share real-world wellness data

🔹 Translate findings into tools that improve healthspan for both species.

Imagine a world where your dog’s wellness data helps decode the mystery of aging… and you’re rewarded for contributing to the science.

That’s the Dog Years DAO vision: turning love, care, and daily companionship into measurable longevity insights that can benefit all of humanity.
